Latest market conditions

Ongoing escalation in the Middle East is adding an extra layer of uncertainty across global supply chains.

A NOTE FROM PETER ANDREWS

“The team has been fielding a lot of questions regarding the market situation at the moment. These questions are all real and valid and, more often than not, we have the same questions ourselves.

It’s too early to predict how the market will move; at this point in time we at Andrews Meat are taking the position that we want to allow the situation to play out as much as we can to better understand the dynamics.

FUEL & FUEL LEVIES

As of earlier this week, all of our freight forwarders have initiated policies of weekly fuel levy adjustments, and we are seeing sustained price increases in fuel negatively impacting our own fleet operations. Levies have risen from what were around 15-20% to a range of 40–48%, depending on the business and its fleet.

We are monitoring the situation with the support of our partners JBS and, at time of writing today, are absorbing the increased levies. This will be reassessed weekly before a decision is made and communicated.

There are three main unknowns in this situation – one is the effects on transport and freight costs; another is the effects on the broader supply chain (costs of both primary and secondary production); and finally, the degree to which this situation will affect the domestic against the export markets.

The market has its own volatility separate to any geopolitical issues, such as livestock prices and global demand for Australian meat. We can only request that you watch this space on its regular fortnightly basis as we do our best to update you in what is a constantly fluctuating situation.”
